Why turn-based combat still works on phones

People keep announcing the death of turn-based combat, and it keeps refusing to die. On mobile especially, it's arguably the best fit for the format — you can think between taps, pause mid-fight, and play in short bursts without losing the thread.

Games like Ember of the Hollow Crown show why. There's no reflex barrier, so difficulty comes from decisions instead of dexterity. That means a well-designed fight stays interesting even on a small screen with imprecise controls.

The trick good developers use is transparency. When you can see exactly what each ability does and how much damage a hit will land, every choice feels deliberate. Bad turn-based games hide their numbers; good ones show them off.

If you bounced off the genre years ago, it might be worth another look. The best modern ones are faster, clearer, and far kinder to your time than the classics that scared people away.
