Making strategy games work on a touchscreen

April 19, 2026 · Lukas Brandt

For years, strategy games on phones felt like a compromise. Precise unit control on a small screen was a nightmare, and the genre suffered for it. That's finally changing.

Ironline Command is a good example of the new approach. Instead of fighting you with fiddly selection, it leans on smart grouping and clear order menus. You spend your energy on the plan, not on wrestling the interface.

The best mobile strategy designers accept the screen's limits and build around them. Fewer units, clearer roles, and decisions that matter more than micro-management. It's a different flavor than PC strategy, but it's a legitimate one.

If tiny fiddly controls put you off strategy games before, the modern crop is worth revisiting. The genre grew up to fit the device.
